Black onyx is a variety of chalcedony.

Black Onyx has always been used for funeral, religious and magical ceremonies, for divination, for carving figures of divinities and as an amulet on swords, shields and armor. While in some cultures he was loved and honored, in others he was despised and feared: it was believed to bring misfortune as well as discord and sadness. It is linked to Saturn, the evil planet par excellence. 

According to a legend, the universe originated precisely from black onyx. By exploding, this crystal gave rise to everything that exists in the world. It is no coincidence that in the past it was called the house of the gods, the place where they remained asleep.

It is a stone that induces Introspection, forcing us to face our inner Shadows and Demons. Thanks to this, it can increase our concentration and pushes us to the Self-Realization of ourselves, urging us to separate ourselves from habits, people, lifestyles, which are harmful to us, it is necessary to eliminate.

On a spiritual level, black onyx protects us from negative influences, shielding us. It is often used in rituals where there is the need or the foresight to shield oneself from negative influences that could awaken in the meantime, creating a kind of protection corridor. It removes the ill will of those around us, and is believed to help against nightmares.

Black onyx is mistakenly considered a malefic stone, and instead it is of protection and introspection.

It is a stone connected with the first Chakra, or Muladhara, linked to the spirit of survival.
